Is Webflow good for SEO? What the platform handles and what you still own.

Yes, Webflow is good for SEO. It publishes clean HTML, builds your XML sitemap, and puts titles, meta descriptions, canonicals, redirects, and schema markup in the editor without plugins. For marketing leads choosing or running a Webflow site, this guide covers what the platform handles, where sites go wrong, and what your team still owns.

Is Webflow good for SEO?

For the technical foundations, yes. A Webflow site is hosted, secured with SSL, and published as HTML, so search engine crawlers get the full text of each page without running JavaScript. The settings that matter for technical SEO are built in, and they work the same way on every page and every CMS template. What Webflow can't do is set them up for you; most Webflow sites that struggle in search results have a setup problem, not a platform problem.

The Webflow Designer also lets you choose the HTML tag for each element, such as section, header, nav, article, or footer, set heading levels from H1 to H6, and add alt text to every image. That semantic HTML helps search engines understand how a page is organized, as long as the team uses it consistently. Responsive breakpoints are built into the Designer too, which matters because Google uses the mobile version of a page for indexing.

Webflow SEO still depends on the same things as SEO anywhere else: content that answers what people search for, a clear site structure, internal links, and pages that load quickly on mobile. Webflow gives you the controls. Whether a site ranks depends on how the team uses them.

What does Webflow handle for on-page SEO and technical SEO?

Enough that you don't need an SEO plugin. These SEO capabilities are built into the editor; some, like schema markup and redirects, need a paid plan.

Webflow SEO features and what you still set
FeatureWhat Webflow doesWhat you still set
HTML outputPublishes page content as HTMLHeading structure and content
XML sitemapGenerates /sitemap.xml when auto-generate is on, with a lastmod date from each page's last publishTurn it on; republish so dates update
Titles and meta descriptionsA field on every static page and a pattern on every CMS templateWrite them; fill the CMS pattern with fields
Canonical tagsAdds a canonical to every page once a global canonical URL is setEnter the base URL, without a trailing slash
301 redirectsA redirect manager with capture groupsMap old URLs before launch
Schema markupA Schema markup field in each page's settingsWrite or generate the markup; validate it
robots.txtEditable rules under Site settings, SEO, IndexingKeep staging rules out of the live file
LocalizationAdds hreflang tags to the sitemap on sites using LocalizeTranslate and check each locale

Two of those are off until someone turns them on in site settings. The sitemap needs Auto-generate sitemap set to Yes under Site settings, SEO tab. The canonical needs a base URL in Global canonical tag URL in the same tab, entered with the protocol and without the trailing slash. Webflow notes that if a canonical is missing or misconfigured, search engines may choose their own preferred URL.

Where do Webflow sites usually go wrong for SEO?

In setup and maintenance. These are the problems our Webflow SEO page warns about, and each one is a setting, not a platform limit.

  1. Empty CMS template SEO fields. On a CMS template, the SEO title and meta description are a pattern that every item uses. If nobody fills the pattern with Collection fields, every blog post can ship with the same title. Use Add field in the template's SEO settings to pull in each item's own title and summary.
  2. An indexed staging site. Every Webflow site has a webflow.io subdomain. If search engines index it, it competes with the live site as a duplicate. Webflow lets you disable indexing for the staging subdomain.
  3. Missing or overwritten redirects. When URLs change in a redesign or migration, each old URL needs a 301 redirect. Webflow recommends keeping the total to about 1,000, and a CSV import replaces all existing redirects, so export the current list before importing a new one.
  4. No global canonical. Without the global canonical URL, the site relies on search engines to pick between www and non-www or other URL variations.
  5. Schema that can't reach its data. CMS schema can bind most field types, but Reference, Multi-reference, and Multi-image fields aren't supported. An author stored as a Reference field can't flow into Article markup; store the author name in a Plain text field too.
  6. Images without responsive sizes. Images added to CMS items through a CSV import don't get responsive variants, which can slow pages on mobile. Upload key images directly.

Can you add schema markup, meta tags, and canonical tags in Webflow?

Yes, all three, with a few limits worth knowing before you build templates.

Meta titles and descriptions. Every static page has fields for its title tag and meta description in Page settings. On a CMS template, you set a pattern once and use Add field to pull in each item's own data, so dynamic content gets unique titles and descriptions. Search engines may still rewrite a meta description with text from the page.

Schema markup. Open the page's settings and use the Schema markup field. You can write your own markup or generate it with Webflow AI, and the markup is published in the page's head. It needs a paid Site plan or a paid Workspace. On a CMS template, bind Collection fields so each item gets its own data; the supported types include Plain text, Image, Link, Number, Date/Time, and Option. Webflow advises against adding the same schema both in this field and in custom code, and recommends checking it with the Schema Markup Validator or Google's Rich Results Test. Valid markup makes a page eligible for rich results, sometimes called rich snippets, in Google search results; it doesn't guarantee them.

Canonical tags. The global setting combines your base URL with each page's slug, which keeps duplicate content from URL variations under control. A static page can override it with its own canonical URL in its SEO settings, which is useful when two pages share content on purpose. Webflow warns not to set a global canonical if another tool, such as a tag manager, already injects canonical tags, because you'd end up with two.

Is Webflow a good choice for AI search and answer engines?

The same strengths apply. AI crawlers need to read the text of a page, and many of them don't run JavaScript. Because Webflow publishes content in the HTML, those crawlers see what users see.

Google says you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files, or special markup to appear in its AI features; a page has to be indexed and eligible for a snippet. So the work that helps a Webflow site in AI answers is the work that helps it in search: clear answers near the top of each page, question-based headings, accurate structured data, and an Organization description that matches the rest of the site.

Webflow also lets you upload an llms.txt file, but Webflow itself calls the feature experimental, and no major AI company documents reading the file. Treat it as optional.

How does Webflow compare with WordPress for SEO?

Neither platform ranks better on its own. The difference is where the SEO controls live and who maintains them.

WordPress core generates a basic sitemap, and most WordPress sites add an SEO plugin such as Yoast SEO for titles, meta descriptions, schema, and other SEO elements, plus separate plugins for redirects and caching. That gives a large choice of SEO tools, but every plugin needs updates and can conflict with the theme or other plugins. Webflow builds the same essential SEO elements into the editor and handles hosting, so there's less to maintain and fewer ways for an update to break a template.

WordPress sites keep the edge where a plugin does something Webflow doesn't, and for teams that need full control over the server. For international SEO, Webflow Localize adds hreflang tags to the sitemap for each locale. Our WordPress to Webflow migration guide covers the SEO steps if you decide to move.

What do you still own on a Webflow site?

Everything the platform can't decide for you:

  • Content and search intent. Which queries each page targets, and whether it answers them better than the pages already ranking.
  • Site structure and internal links. Content organization, SEO-friendly URLs, and the URL structures of each folder are your decisions. Webflow doesn't add contextual links between posts or from posts to service pages.
  • Template decisions. Which fields each CMS Collection has, so titles, descriptions, and schema can be filled per item.
  • Monitoring. Coverage, 404 errors, and Core Web Vitals in Google Search Console after every major publish, and SEO performance against your target queries.
  • Image optimization and page speed. Upload images at sensible sizes and check site speed on the heaviest templates.
  • Redirects over time. Every time someone changes a slug, a redirect has to be added.

Webflow removes the plugin maintenance and hosting work that comes with many other platforms. It doesn't remove the SEO strategy. For a closer look at the trade-offs with a custom build, see our guide to Webflow vs custom code.

Questions about Webflow and SEO

Is Webflow better than WordPress for SEO?

Neither ranks better on its own. Webflow includes the main technical SEO controls without plugins; WordPress gets them from plugins and themes. Rankings depend on content, links, and setup on either platform.

Does Webflow create a sitemap automatically?

Yes, when Auto-generate sitemap is turned on under Site settings, SEO tab. Each URL gets a lastmod date from when the page was last published, and you can replace it with a custom sitemap.

Can you add schema markup in Webflow?

Yes. Each page, including CMS template pages, has a Schema markup field in Page settings. You can bind CMS fields to it, except Reference, Multi-reference, and Multi-image fields.

Does the webflow.io staging site hurt SEO?

It can if search engines index it, because it duplicates the live site. Webflow lets you disable indexing for the webflow.io subdomain in Site settings.

Can AI search engines read Webflow sites?

Yes. Webflow publishes page content as HTML, so crawlers that don't run JavaScript can read it. Google says you don't need special files or markup to appear in its AI features.
