AEO & GEO

AEO and GEO for B2B SaaS: get named in the answers your buyers read.

An AEO agency, or GEO agency, works toward one outcome: your company named and cited when buyers ask AI assistants what to buy. We track the prompts your buyers use in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI answers. Then we fix the pages, technical gaps and third-party mentions that decide if you show up.

AI visibility tracking and reporting are part of every Growth engagement, on Webflow and custom-coded sites.

Why AI search now shapes B2B software shortlists.

Many software buyers now ask AI assistants before they turn to traditional search engines, and the answer can decide who makes the shortlist. Four numbers from the last eighteen months show where buyer search behavior stands.

  • Research starts in chat. In G2's April 2026 survey, 51% of B2B software buyers said they start research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google.
  • AI is in nearly every purchase. Forrester's State of Business Buying 2026 found 94% of business buyers use AI during their buying process.
  • AI names vendors. In G2's 2026 Buyer Behavior Report, 82% of buyers had received software recommendations from an AI chatbot in the previous two years.
  • Fewer clicks reach your site. When Google showed an AI summary, Pew Research found people clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% when there was no summary.

What AEO and GEO actually involve.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO) are two names for the same job: making your company the one AI systems mention and link to. Some agencies sell it as AI SEO or AI search optimization. Google says its AI features have no special requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. So the work stands on traditional SEO and adds four things most SEO programs skip.

  • Prompt tracking. A fixed set of buyer questions, run across AI platforms on a schedule, because answers change from one run to the next. Prompts are longer and more specific than keywords, like "best SOC 2 automation tool for a 50-person fintech", and that's where buyers ready to shortlist show up.
  • Answer-shaped pages. Pages that give direct answers, with the numbers and the trade-offs in plain sentences AI models can quote.
  • Third-party presence. Brand mentions on the lists, review sites and communities AI systems cite when your own site isn't enough.
  • Entity and knowledge graph optimization. The same company name, description and category on your site, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, G2 and Wikidata where you qualify, tied together with Organization schema and sameAs links.

If your site runs on Webflow, our Webflow SEO and AEO page covers the platform settings that matter.

Process

How we run an AEO and GEO program.

Our generative engine optimization services follow the same six steps every time. The first two set your AEO strategy, and they finish before we change anything on your site.

Prompt set illustration

01 Prompt set

30 to 50 questions your buyers ask, built from sales calls, keyword research and search data: category, comparison, alternatives, problem and pricing prompts.

Baseline illustration

02 Baseline

How often each AI platform names you, which competitors it names instead, and which pages it cites as sources. We also review your wider digital presence: reviews, listings and mentions.

Technical optimization illustration

03 Technical optimization

robots.txt rules for search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot, content rendered on the server, and Bing Webmaster Tools with IndexNow for Copilot and Bing.

Pages that answer illustration

04 Pages that answer

New and rewritten pages for the prompts you lose: comparisons, alternatives, use cases, pricing, integrations and FAQs. We plan them in topic clusters, so the content strategy builds topical authority instead of one-off posts.

Digital PR and mentions illustration

05 Digital PR and mentions

Outreach to the lists and publications AI already cites in your category, link building where it's earned, and review and community work.

Reporting illustration

06 Reporting

Mention rate by platform and prompt, cited pages, AI-referred visits and the pipeline they bring in, every month.

What the evidence says gets cited.

A lot of what's sold as AEO is guesswork. These are the findings we work from, with their sources.

  • Statistics, quotations and sources. In the research paper that coined GEO (KDD 2024), which tested generative search engines, adding citations, quotations and statistics raised visibility in AI answers by up to 40% in the authors' benchmark. Keyword stuffing didn't help.
  • Lists and third-party pages. In an Ahrefs study of 750 prompts, "best of" lists made up 43.8% of the page types ChatGPT cited. In our own tracking for the web agency category, roundups were 25 of the 40 pages AI assistants cited most.
  • llms.txt isn't a lever yet. Google says its Search ignores the file, and an SE Ranking analysis of about 300,000 domains found no measurable effect on AI citations. We add one, but we don't sell it as strategy.
  • Schema supports, it doesn't switch anything on. Google says structured data isn't required for generative AI search. We use it where it describes the page accurately.

How we measure AI search visibility.

AI answers vary between runs, so one screenshot proves nothing. Our AI search visibility tracking measures trends across a fixed set of prompts, because unlike traditional SEO there's no single rank position to report.

  • Mention rate. The share of tracked prompts and runs where each platform names you, broken down by platform and prompt type.
  • Citations. AI citation frequency: which of your pages AI answers link to, and how often. We add the citation data Bing Webmaster Tools reports for Copilot and Bing's AI summaries.
  • AI-referred traffic and pipeline. Visits from ChatGPT, which tags its links with utm_source=chatgpt.com, and from Perplexity, Gemini and others, followed through to demo requests.
  • Google's AI features. AI Overview visibility from the Search Console reports Google added in 2026, which cover AI Overviews and AI Mode, next to your Google rankings for the same topics.

What you get every month.

Our AEO services run on a monthly cycle, so you always know what changed, what we shipped and what's next.

  • A visibility report. Mention rate, citations and AI-referred pipeline against the baseline, with the prompts you won and lost.
  • Shipped work. The pages, rewrites and technical changes that went live, each tied to the prompts it targets.
  • Outreach log. Which lists, publications and communities we contacted, and what came of it.
  • Next month's plan. The priorities for the coming month and the reasons behind them, reviewed with you.

When AEO shouldn't be your priority.

AEO pays off over months, and it depends on foundations. Put it later on the list if one of these fits.

  • Google can't index your site properly. Fix technical SEO first. Google's AI features draw on the same index, so search visibility problems carry straight over.
  • Nobody searches for your category yet. In a new category, PR and brand building create the brand authority and mentions AEO needs.
  • You need pipeline this month. AEO compounds slowly. Paid search and outbound are faster.
  • You have no proof to publish. Without case studies, numbers or named customers, there's little for AI systems to cite.
  • You want a guarantee. No one controls what AI platforms say. Anyone promising placement is guessing or gaming the system.

AEO agency FAQs.

What is AEO?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting your company mentioned and cited by AI answer engines: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Microsoft Copilot. The term dates from the era of featured snippets and voice search; today it mostly means AI-generated answers. It uses the same foundations as SEO, plus prompt tracking, answer-first pages and third-party mentions.

What's the difference between AEO, GEO and SEO?

Traditional SEO targets Google rankings and clicks from search results. AEO and GEO target mentions in AI answers. GEO, generative engine optimization, comes from a 2023 research paper; AEO is the name most marketers use, so a generative engine optimization agency and an AEO agency sell the same work. In practice it's one program, because AI answers draw on the same indexed pages your SEO strategy works on.

What is an AI SEO agency?

Usually the same thing as an AEO or GEO agency: a team that works on your visibility in AI-generated answers as well as in search results. Some agencies use "AI SEO" to mean SEO done with AI tools instead, so ask which one you're buying.

How do we choose an AEO agency?

The best answer engine optimization agencies show their method before the pitch. Ask to see the prompt set, which platforms they track and how often, and how they tell real changes from run-to-run noise. Ask what they'll change on your site and what they do off it, such as digital PR. Ask for work in your industry and a sample monthly report with mention rate, citations and pipeline. Then compare the monthly cost with your SEO budget, because most of the work overlaps. If an agency can't show these, keep looking.

Can you guarantee we'll appear in ChatGPT?

No. ChatGPT, Google and the other platforms decide what they show, and their answers change between runs. We commit to the work, the measurement and a clear reason for every change. Treat any guarantee of AI placement as a warning sign.

How long does AEO take to show results?

AI search engines that search the web live, such as Perplexity and ChatGPT search, can pick up a new or rewritten page soon after it's crawled. Moving your mention rate across a whole prompt set takes months of content and third-party work, so we report progress monthly from the start.

How do you measure AI visibility?

We run a fixed set of 30 to 50 buyer prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI answers on a regular schedule. Each report shows the share of answers that name you, the pages they cite, and the visits and pipeline that come from AI referrals.

Do we need an llms.txt file?

It doesn't hurt, and we add one, but don't expect it to change your visibility. Google says its Search ignores llms.txt, and a study of about 300,000 domains found no measurable effect on AI citations.

Does AEO work on Webflow and on custom-coded sites?

Yes. The work is mostly content, structure and authority. On Webflow we use the native schema field, crawler settings and, on Team and Enterprise plans with the Analyze add-on, Webflow's own AEO analytics. On custom-coded sites we make the same changes in code.

How much do AEO and GEO services cost?

Agencies usually charge a monthly retainer for answer engine optimization services, sometimes after a one-off audit. Ours is part of the Growth (SEO/GEO + CRO) plan, billed monthly and cancellable anytime; the pricing page lists the price and what's included.

Can we do AEO in-house?

Yes, if someone owns it. You'll need prompt tracking, a writer who can interview your experts, access to the website, and time for outreach. Some marketing teams keep the writing in-house or with a content marketing agency, and bring in an AEO specialist for the technical work and the outreach.
