What does it mean to rank in ChatGPT?
Ranking in ChatGPT means your brand is named, or your page is cited, when ChatGPT answers a question in your category. There is no list of ten positions. The answer changes with the prompt, the user, and the run, so the realistic goal is a higher share of answers, not a rank.
You can show up in two ways:
- A mention: ChatGPT names your product in the answer text. That can come from the model's training data, or from pages it retrieved for this answer.
- A citation: ChatGPT links to your page as a source. Since OpenAI launched ChatGPT search on October 31, 2024, "ChatGPT will choose to search the web based on what you ask," and answers carry links to their sources.
Training data and live retrieval are controlled separately. OpenAI's GPTBot crawls content "that may be used in training our generative AI foundation models," while OAI-SearchBot is "used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features." Search access is the part a B2B SaaS team controls today. Some call this ChatGPT SEO or generative engine optimization (GEO). It builds on traditional SEO: the same crawlable, indexable pages serve search engines and AI tools, and most of the work carries over to Google's AI Overviews and Perplexity.
| Google search | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|
| What you win | A position among the blue links on a results page | A mention in the answer, or a cited link |
| What decides it | Google's index and ranking systems | Retrieved pages, partner content, and what the model learned in training |
| Main levers | Relevant, crawlable pages and links | Crawler access, quotable answers, and mentions on other sites |
| How you measure it | Positions and clicks in Google Search Console | Share of answers across a fixed prompt set, plus referral traffic |
Stability is the other big difference. In SparkToro's January 2026 study of 2,961 runs across ChatGPT, Claude, and Google's AI answers, there was less than a 1 in 100 chance that ChatGPT or Google's AI returned the same list of brands in two responses. The same list in the same order came up less than once in 1,000 responses. A single screenshot of an answer proves very little.
How does ChatGPT search choose sources, and does it use Bing's index?
ChatGPT decides whether a prompt needs a web search, then draws on third-party search providers and partner content and cites the pages it uses. OpenAI does not publish ranking factors, so what you can rely on is its crawler documentation, plus independent studies of what ChatGPT cites.
OpenAI's launch post says ChatGPT search uses "third-party search providers, as well as content provided directly by our partners," such as news organizations. Bing has the longest documented link. On May 23, 2023, Microsoft announced it was "bringing Bing to ChatGPT as the default search experience." That announcement came before ChatGPT search existed, so treat Bing's index as a likely input, not a confirmed ranking rule. Verifying your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submitting your XML sitemap takes about an hour and removes one risk.
Google rankings help, but they don't decide which page gets cited. An Ahrefs study published in September 2025 ran about 3,311 head terms through ChatGPT and Google. Only 10% of the URLs ChatGPT cited also appeared in Google's top 10 for that query, against 31.8% at the domain level. Even across Google's top 100, URL overlap was 20.69%. For comparison, 65.07% of the URLs Perplexity cited were in Google's top 10. The author's summary: "ChatGPT doesn't follow Google's sources, Perplexity does."
Two practical consequences follow:
- Ranking domains turned up about three times as often as ranking pages, so build depth across the topics you sell into, not one perfect target page. Links from authoritative sites still help your domain rank.
- A page that doesn't rank well in Google search results can still be the one ChatGPT quotes, if it answers the prompt more directly than the pages that do.
How do you make sure ChatGPT can crawl your site?
Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, keep the pages you want cited indexable, and put your main content in the HTML your server sends. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers," and that robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to reach its search systems.
| Crawler | What OpenAI says it does | If you block it |
|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | Surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features | Your pages are not shown in ChatGPT search answers |
| GPTBot | Crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI's foundation models | Your content should not be used for training; search is a separate setting |
| ChatGPT-User | Visits pages for actions a user starts in ChatGPT; it does not crawl automatically | robots.txt rules may not apply, and it does not decide what appears in search |
A technical SEO check for ChatGPT access:
- Read your robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot, and for broad rules, such as a disallow under "User-agent: *", that catch it. Our guide to AI crawlers in robots.txt covers the rules line by line.
- Check the firewall or content delivery network (CDN) in front of your site. Some offer one-click rules that block AI bots, and an open robots.txt does not help if the firewall turns the crawler away. OpenAI publishes OAI-SearchBot's IP ranges at openai.com/searchbot.json for allowlisting.
- Remove noindex from pages you want cited. OpenAI's publisher FAQ, updated in October 2026, says "Any public website can appear in ChatGPT search," and that a page blocked in robots.txt may still surface as a bare link and title. To keep a page out, use the noindex meta tag and let the crawler read it.
- Serve important content as HTML. In Vercel's December 2024 analysis of crawler traffic, "none of the major AI crawlers currently render JavaScript," OpenAI's included. On a Webflow site, text from the Designer and CMS fields ships in the page HTML. Check anything a script adds after load, such as review widgets, pricing calculators, or "load more" lists. To test, open the page source and search for a sentence from your key answer.
- Fix 404 errors and redirect chains. The same analysis found ChatGPT spent 34.82% of its fetches on 404 pages, so keep your XML sitemap current and redirect retired URLs.
What content gets ChatGPT citations?
ChatGPT cites passages it can lift whole: a definition, a dated number, a comparison table, or a short list of steps under a heading that matches the question. Studies of its sources also show a pull toward recently updated pages and "best X" lists, which shapes the answers to B2B software prompts.
In an Ahrefs study of 750 prompts about software, products, and agencies, published December 4, 2025, "best X" blog lists made up 43.8% of the page types ChatGPT cited. Of the cited lists with a clear date, "79.1% were last updated in 2025, and 26% were last updated in the past two months alone." Brands placed higher in those lists were more likely to appear in the answer, though the author stops short of a definitive conclusion.
What that means when you write content for your own site:
- Answer one question per section, in the first one or two sentences, then add the detail. Use clear headings that match how buyers phrase the question.
- Match the search intent behind the prompt, and cover the follow-up questions too. Topical completeness matters more than keyword density.
- Put a number, date, or named source behind each claim. Generic AI-generated content gives AI models nothing specific to quote.
- Keep paragraphs short and use bullet points for options or steps, so each passage makes sense on its own.
- Show a visible updated date, and update the facts behind it: features, integrations, pricing model, customer numbers.
- Use plain HTML comparison tables for anything with three or more options.
- Name a real author with relevant experience, on a profile page that shows it.
| Prompt type | Example prompt | Page that answers it |
|---|---|---|
| Shortlist | "best [category] tools for mid-market teams" | A category page that says who the product fits, plus places in third-party lists |
| Comparison | "[your product] vs [competitor] for a 50-person sales team" | A comparison page with a table and a fair verdict |
| Fit | "does [your product] integrate with Salesforce" | An integration page that lists what syncs and how to set it up |
| Cost | "how much does [your product] cost" | A pricing page with plans, or the drivers of cost |
| Proof | "[your product] results for fintech companies" | Case studies with dated, specific outcomes |
Two popular tactics have no support in OpenAI's documentation. Its publisher FAQ asks sites to allow OAI-SearchBot and does not mention structured data or llms.txt. Schema markup and other structured data still help search engines read a page, so add them where they match the visible content. Our review of schema markup for AI search covers what the evidence supports, and our llms.txt guide covers that file.
How do brand mentions shape your brand's visibility in ChatGPT?
For buying prompts, ChatGPT draws heavily on what other sites say about you: comparison lists, review sites, community threads, and industry publications. A brand placed high in several trusted third-party lists is more likely to appear in the answer than one that only describes itself on its own website.
In our own tracking for the web agency category, roundups were 25 of the 40 pages AI assistants cited most. The Ahrefs study found the pattern in software prompts too, along with a warning sign. In 169 of the 250 "best X software" searches it checked in Google (67.6%), the results included a list in which the company writing it ranked itself first.
Our view: publish honest comparison pages on your own site, and spend more of your effort on accurate placement on independent ones. To earn more brand mentions:
- Find the pages ChatGPT cites for your top prompts: lists, review profiles, Reddit threads, and analyst pages. Our 30-prompt method shows how to collect them.
- Ask list publishers to add or correct your entry, with evidence they can check, such as a customer count or a case study with dated results.
- Keep facts consistent across your site, review profiles, LinkedIn, and directories: category, ideal customer profile, integrations, and pricing model. Conflicting descriptions make one clear answer harder for AI models to give.
- Publish original data others want to cite, such as benchmarks from your product or survey results. It earns links and brand mentions at the same time.
- Earn reviews on the platforms your buyers use, and answer questions in the communities where they ask, as yourself.
You can't buy your way into the organic answer. OpenAI's advertising principles, published January 16, 2026, state: "Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you."
How do you measure visibility in ChatGPT?
Run a fixed set of buyer prompts on a schedule, record whether each answer mentions or cites you, and report the share across many runs. Then check the business effect in analytics: OpenAI says ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs.
SparkToro's study concluded that "visibility % across dozens to hundreds of prompts run multiple times is a reasonable metric," and its author suggests running each prompt dozens of times. A lean team can still see direction with a smaller set run every month. We track 30 to 50 buyer prompts for each client and report the results monthly.
| Metric | What it tells you | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Mention rate | Share of answers that name your brand | Your prompt runs |
| Citation rate | Share of answers that link to your site | The sources listed in each answer |
| Cited pages | Which of your URLs get cited, and which pages win instead | The sources listed in each answer |
| Referral traffic and conversions | Whether visibility turns into visits, demos, and pipeline | Google Analytics 4 (GA4) and your CRM, using utm_source=chatgpt.com |
Our guides to tracking brand mentions in ChatGPT and ChatGPT traffic in GA4 set up both halves. Google Search Console won't help with this part, since it reports Google Search only.
Can you use ChatGPT and other AI tools for SEO and content creation?
Yes, for the parts a person can check quickly: grouping keyword research by search intent, outlining a page from real customer questions, drafting meta descriptions, or writing schema markup in JSON-LD for a developer to validate. The facts, examples, and verdicts should come from your team.
Two cautions apply. AI-generated answers repeat what is already common, and commodity text gives ChatGPT nothing new to cite. Every claim also needs human review before it ships, because AI responses about your brand may quote your page as written, wrong price and outdated statistics included.
How should a B2B SaaS team start with ChatGPT SEO?
Start with access and a baseline, then rebuild the pages behind your most valuable prompts, then work on third-party mentions. A month is a workable first cycle; the mention work keeps running after it.
- Week 1: check robots.txt, firewall rules, noindex tags, and page source for your 20 most important pages. Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Week 1: write 20 to 30 buyer prompts across shortlist, comparison, integration, cost, and proof questions. Run each several times and record mentions and cited URLs.
- Week 2: for each prompt where you are missing, note which pages ChatGPT cites instead, and what they say that your pages don't.
- Weeks 2 and 3: rewrite or create one page per priority question, with a direct answer, a dated fact, and a table where options are compared.
- Week 3: update stale facts across existing content, show the updated date, and add internal links from related pages.
- Week 4: contact the publishers of 3 to 5 cited lists with evidence, and ask recent customers for reviews.
- Every month: rerun the same prompts, compare mention and citation rates, and check ChatGPT sessions and demo requests in GA4.

Questions about ranking in ChatGPT
Can you pay to rank in ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI's advertising principles, published January 16, 2026, say ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives and are always separate and clearly labeled. Visibility in the answer itself has to be earned.
Does blocking GPTBot remove my site from ChatGPT search?
No. GPTBot crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI's models, while OAI-SearchBot decides whether your pages can appear in ChatGPT search. OpenAI treats the two robots.txt settings separately, so you can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot.
Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing to search?
OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers and content from partners. Microsoft announced Bing as ChatGPT's default search experience in May 2023, so verifying your site in Bing Webmaster Tools is a sensible step.
How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?
OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to reach its search systems. There is no published timeline for new pages or brand mentions, so measure against a baseline every month.
Do I need schema markup or an llms.txt file to rank in ChatGPT?
Neither is required. OpenAI's publisher FAQ asks sites to allow OAI-SearchBot and does not mention structured data or llms.txt. Schema still helps search engines read a page, so add it where it matches the visible content.
Is ChatGPT SEO different from traditional SEO?
It builds on the same foundations: crawlable, indexable pages that answer real questions. What changes is the goal and the measurement, a share of mentions and citations across many prompts instead of one position, and the weight of what other sites say about you.
